Hampir semua death metallers tau band EDGE OF SANITY atau si Dan Swanö. Tekanang pulang ku membuat zine dulu….
Ok, Soalan atau interview ani cakap Inggris, malas ku mentranslate ke Bahasa Melayu karang lain pulang ertinya.
Dan The PsychopathWell..I still have a commitment to work halftime at a Musicshop, so I actually work there 24 hours a week. It's nice there most of the time. Cool to see "normal" people and discuss Hz and dB and get paid :) I also go see my girlfriend in Germany on a regular basis. Then we go out and gig and rehearse with Nightingale from time to time. We were in Romania this weekend and in a month we kick Finlands ass :)
WHEN IS YOUR FIRST INVOLVED AND INTERESTED WORKING IN THE STUDIO?
I was obsessed with the idea of recording what ever song I wrote since a very young age. When the 4 track cassette porta studios got cheaper we bought one for my band, and then I was hooked!
DO YOU GO FOR ANY COURSES OR LEARN FORM OTHER PRODUCER OR MAY BE JUST LEARN THROUGH EXPERIENCE?
It's only experience that works. Of course a basic knowledge in acoustics and sound physics is always useful. But if you want to be a successful metal engineer, you need to take a lot of different ways to make it happen :)
IS IT VERY HARD TO DO WHAT THE BANDS WANTED? DO YOU ALWAYS DO WHAT THEY WANT OR YOU DO AS YOUR STANDARD?
I provide a service, and that is to give them exactly what they want. 99 times out of 100 the band/producer is right about the changes they want. After all, it them, not me that will play this album to all friends and "stand by it" for eternity
WHAT DO YOU USE FOR YOUR UNISOUND STUDIO LIKE MIC’S, EQ’S, RIG, AMPS, SOFTWARE OR AMPS THAT YOU USED?
That's secret ;) But I can give you a hint, that I own 2 UAD-2 QUADCARD and have access to all the UAD plugins ever released :)
HOW DO YOU FELT WORKING WITH BANDS FROM DIFFERENT GENRE? HOW LONG DID YOU SPEND IN THE STUDIO FOR EVERY FULL-LENGTH? ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE PRICE?
The price is cool with me. I am one of the cheaper in the industry considering that I get really good results that can compete with the best and most expensive mixers. A full length vary a lot. But I guess if you break it all down with pre and post production stuff... I think about 1 day per song.
Live sama adi beradinya, Dag
DO YOU SATISFIED WITH ALL YOUR WORKS? HOW ABOUT WITH DARK FUNERAL?
I like the stuff we did the 1st mini album. The 1st full length that I fucked up, is a dark page in my book. I am forever sorry. I shouldn't have messed around so much with changing speakers. IU should have bought a very expensive pair and learned them properly :)
TOMAS SKOGSBERG IS ONE OF THE WELLKNOWN SWEDISH PRODUCER. WHO ELSE DO YOU THINK A GOOD SWEDISH PRODUCER NOWADAYS?
Jens Bogren is great. Peter T’gtgren is also still kicking ass. Pelle in Studio Underground and Ronny at Studio Seven is underrated!!
IN THE EARLY DAYS, NEARLY EVRYBODY KNOWS SUNLIGHT STUDIO. DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER RECOMMENDED STUDIOS?
Fascination Street, Studio Seven, Studio Underground, Abyss I and II and Soundlab is pretty nice too!!
WHAT BAND DO YOU THINK HAS A VERY GOOD ALBUM PRODUCTION SO FAR?WHY?
I like the sound on Opeth's "Ghost reveries". It's clear and punchy, unique sounding but still metal! I also like the 2 latest Nickelback albums. They sound fat as fuck. The "Phobia" album from Breaking Benjamin is kick ass too!
WHEN DID YOU FIRST LEARN PLAYING THE INSTRUMENTS? HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN METAL? YOUR EARLY BAND BEFORE EDGE OF SANITY?
I started playing drums when I was 7. I got involved in hardrock around 1984-85, then really more thrash stuff in 1987-88.
YOU ARE INVOLVED WITH LOTS OF BANDS AS A BAND MEMBER, AS A GUEST AND STUDIO WORKS. HOW DO YOU MANAGING YOUR TIME?
I don't manage it really. Just gives me panic. I just make sure that I erase any time consuming routines. I like to be effective with my time. I listen to the ne TPH being mixed in my headphones, while I type this interview in just enough time to make sure I get 7 hours of sleep :)
HOW DID YOU INVOLVED WITH BANDS LIKE PAN.THY.MONIUM, KATATONIA, GODSEND, NIGHTINGLE INSTEAD OF EDGE OF SANITY? GODSEND IS ONE OF MY FAVE BAND, ANY NEWS FROM GODSEND?
Pan Thy Monium was an outlet to make weird stuff we didn't have the guts to do with EOS. Try keybaords and tuning down and use blastbeats etc. Katatonia sent me a letter as fans and wanted to record at Gorysound...and did so the summer of 92. Godsend was the same. Gunder contacted me and recorded first the demo and then 3 albums with me! I haven't heard a beep from him since I finished the last album we did 13 years ago (??)
YOU PLAY INSTRUMENTS LIKE DRUMS, GUITARS, KEYBOARD IN MOST THE RELEASES. HOW DO YOU REMEMBER THE MUSIC/SONGS FOR EACH BAND OR SONG?
I really don't. :) I am terrible with that kind of stuff.
TELL ME ABOUT ALL YOUR INSTRUMENTS. WHAT BRAND YOU ARE USING? WHY?
I am not a Brand-nerd. I use instruments that makes sense. Read all about it here: http://www.musicians-navigator.com/articles-guitar-gear/dan-swano-interview/
Yep. We rehearse in a small town called Kumla where none of us live :) But the rehearsal room rocks!!
AS I KINOW, EDGE OF SANITY’S FOURTH ALBUM “PURGATORY AFTERGLOW” 1994 WAS DEDICATED TO KURT COBAIN OF NIRVANA. WHY? GRUNGE MUSIC ONCE NEARLY DROWNED DEATH METAL SCENE ESPECIALLY IN THE STATES. BUT I DON’T KNOW IN SCANDINAVIA? DO YOU FOLLOW THE TREND AT THAT TIME?
I liked Nirvana before they got big. Uffe in Entombed sent me a tape of "Bleach" and to me it was the ultimate fusion of Rock and Death Metal. Kind of....Me and Dread was huge grunge fans at the time of his death.
WHAT DO YOU LISTEN CURRENTLY? AND DO YOU LSITEN TO ANY ASIAN BANDS? DO YOU STILL PLAYING PROG DEATH METAL?
No Asian bands I am afraid ;) I have just bought my first 160 GB iPod so I listen to whatever pops up there when I am out driving. Really nice!!
DO YOU STILL READ UNDERGROUND FANZINES OR BUY DEMO FROM UNSIGNED BANDS? OR YOU DON’T HAVE ANY TIME FOR THAT ANYMORE?
I read Classic Rock, Sweden Rock and Close Up and of course, Prog! That is about it. I just finsihed the bios from Slash and Ozzy. Both ruled!!
Not really. The tapetrading never made any huuuge dips in bands recordsales. I'd say some bands got famous because of tapetrading. Downloads are really killing music!! It sucks.
LASTLY, WHAT YOU CAN SEE THE METAL SCENE NOWADAYS? DO WE SEE MANY NEW METAL SUB-GENRE WILL EXIST? ACTUALLY, I MISSED THE SCENE END OF 80’S & EARLY 90’S. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME FOR THIS INTERVIEW.
I think there is a lot of subgrenres in metal these days. A few of them are slowly becoming outdated. Much Opeth and Soilwork clones out there...
See ya
Dan
